While waiting for snow…

Alright. I haven’t been very active on our blog lately, our Facebook page taking most of my online time (What? You are not yet a fan of us on Facebook? Click  here to become one now!).

Facebook is a wonderful tool to give our fans flash news and quick updates on activities and events. But the posts are so short, it is sometimes difficult to express an idea in 250 words! And I felt like I needed to write about activities to do when the snow takes longer than these past winters to stick on the ground…

Bretton Woods
Bretton Woods on Thanksgiving 2009, posted on Facebook By Marti Mayne

Winter is taking its time this year, even though some snow fell early in October and again early November. But  the temperatures are too high for the new snow guns on Cranmore to even whiten the slopes as it melts immediately. The worse is that the tubing park was supposed to open for Thanksgiving, but the rain just washed all hopes. Bretton Woods is open (they are northern from us), but even Attitash is having a hard time this year in the making of the snow. We are all finger crossed as the expected opening day for Cranmore is now December 5th. I believe they can make it as the temperatures dropped dramatically this weekend and we even had a bit of snow (Mt Kearsarge is definitely white today).

In the meantime, while waiting for the slopes to open, there is still plenty of things to do in the Valley. First, the Polar Express Event started this weekend and will last until December 21st. We still have packages available for December 5th for only $395 for three or four persons (2 adults and 1 or 2 children 10 and under). If you’ve never experienced this magical trip, you should check it out and definitely give it a try! Then, we are proposing this year a very successful Shop Til You Drop Package. New Hampshire has the particularity to offer tax-free shopping and in North Conway we know what tax-free shopping is : between the Settlers’ Green Outlet Stores (offering more than 100 brand stores) and our unique Main street stores, you’ll definitely find what  you want for your Christmas gifts. Our package includes 2 night stay (if you really insist, we’ll be happy with one night), breakfast each morning, a voucher for a dinner at a local restaurant, and a brightly fashionable colored purse full of goodies and coupons. On top of  this, we’ll give you a VIP card to get even more savings at the outlet stores and exclusive coupons from our partners! From clothing to home decor, you’ll have it all!

Hiking is still possible and Thierry and I climbed all the way up Mt Kearsarge last week, taking advantage of a beautiful weather and

Blackie at the Summit of Mt Kearsarge

breathtaking views at the top. We had a few frozen spots here and there and had to be careful where we stepped because of slippery conditions, but it was wonderful to hike a popular trail and crossing on our way up only 2 other hikers (in Summer, it is much more crowded!). One of our VIP guests paid us a visit for the first time in November to go climbing and loved it : lodging rates are so much lower, the weather is a bit unpredictable but was gorgeous on the weekend of his stay with us and it was not too cold for rock climbing yet.

Fishing is also possible year-round and  you have lots of streams, lakes and ponds to choose from. The best is probably go with a fishing guide to get the most out of your time along the river! Check here some popular fishing spots…

These conditions won’t last long though: the cold weather finally arrived today, with high winds (which unfortunately caused us a short power outage this morning) so now we’re gonna start our snow dance to make the white stuff fall and accumulate enough for some serious snow play! My son Guillaume will probably lead it as he cannot wait to go snowboarding on Cranmore. See you then?
